The Key of Avarice Description Trained by TimberWolf (timberwolfcanada@hotmail.com) Name: Gideon Age: 17 Appearance: Gideon is about 5'4" and slight of build. Fine-boned and lean, he has long delicate fingers. His eyes are large and wide-set, giving him an even younger, almost baby-faced appearance, which is only accentuated by his round cheeks and small, pointed chin. His hair is a short mop of riotous curls, the surface layers sun-bleached to honey gold while the hidden layers deepen to a sandy brown. Distinguishing Features/Markings: The single most odd and distinguishing feature about Gideon would be his mismatched eyes. One is the warmest chocolate brown; the other is an icy silver-blue. Clothes: Green and gold are Gideon's favourite colours and the largest part of his wardrobe consists of clothing made up in one or more shades of that combination. His preference is to wear loose fitting jacket and trouser combinations, and his particular favourites are those with many hidden pockets. Gideon's tastes run toward expensive clothing and jewellery; rare gems, richly embroidered and hand-beaded fabrics. He is a peacock, firmly believing 'the clothes make the man'. Personality: Gideon tents to be sly and rather mistrustful. He holds
himself aloof from others in general, having learned a long time ago that it is
easier on his conscience (what he has of one) to victimise a stranger than a
friend. He tends to be rather manipulative, working his position to earn himself
as many gifts from his Masters as he possibly can. His over-riding concern is
and always has been his own survival and comfort. As long as serving and
pleasing his Master serves his own interests as well, Gideon is more or less
content to remain a pampered Palace Key, knowing he could never afford this
lifestyle he has become so accustomed to if he were to be forced to attempt to
survive on his own out in the real world. History: Gideon never knew his father. His mother was a cook, cleaning woman and bed-warmer for the brutish owner of a small, dingy tavern. Gideon was barely 5 years old when she died. Having no use for his "dead whore's whey-faced whelp", he cast Gideon out to the street to fend for himself. Having learned well the art of begging customers scraps if he wanted to eat, Gideon managed to survive at least. Eventually, desperation drove him to the Thieves Guild. There he had what to outsiders would be considered an amazing and extensive education. He not only learned all the skills of a master thief... stealth, flexibility, sleight of hand... but also manners, art & jewellery appraisal, and enough history and politics to masquerade flawlessly as a member of the highest social classes, along with the gambling and con games to fleece them of all they owned. It was his own greed and folly that became his downfall. After losing a final enormous wager, already deeply in debt, Gideon was given a choice. Prison or the Palace. He chose to become the Avarice Key. Special Gifts: The same strong and nimble fingers that make Gideon so skillful at sleight of hand make him a gifted masseur, and many a Master has been lulled into a deeply relaxed slumber under his skilled touch. Environment: Gideon's rooms are not large, by Palace standards, but they are among the most luxurious. He has a small bathing room, to serve necessity, but most of his space is divided between his main room and his dressing room. His main room, at first glance, is a rather standard Key's quarters. He has a large bed, a large fireplace, a small set of shelves for books and other belongings, and a small table with two armchairs, perfect for dining, card games or chess. Not apparent to the eye, Gideon has managed to fashion several well-hidden spots to cache pilfered and valuable possessions... loose floorboards, false fireplace stones, and other such secret hiding places conceal his 'collection'. Gideon's favourite room, his dressing room, is nearly as large as his main room. Here, all his clothing is tended and stored, each garment carefully hung or neatly shelved according to style and colour. Large folded and freestanding mirrors allow Gideon to check his appearance from every angle. Most of his free time is spent in this room, playing dress-up, trying on outfit after outfit, clothing and jewels. But rather than revelling in his acquisitions, he can only find fault... if only this jewel were larger, that gold embroidery should be more delicate, more intricately stitched. Outwardly content with his lot in life perhaps, Gideon will never be truly satisfied.
