The Starlight Key Description Trained by Bill the Radish (bill_the_radish@hotmail.com) Name: Shaun Vidar Appearance: Shaun is very obviously not human. His skin is a translucent white that seems to glow in low light and, in fact, if you remove all light you'll find that his skin *does* glow, just very faintly. While his pulses are all in their correct places and visible where you'd expect it, there is no coloration difference to mark where the veins are. Shaun only stands 5'3" tall and thin enough to look immensely fragile but appearances are deceiving! Shaun is just as strong as a normal human male, incredibly hard to injure and doesn't visibly react to pain unless he's actually wounded (whether he feels it before then or not is a popular debate among the Palace servants). His skin, while soft, requires a sharp blade and a lot of force before puncturing and he simply doesn't bruise. Eyes of a solid, endless black (no white, no iris, no pupil; only black) are just a little too large to look normal and create near perfect mirrors for whatever or whoever he's looking at. Facial features are delicate and sharp with high cheekbones and a slightly pouty mouth. The ears that peak through Shaun's hair are one of his most unusual features, tapering to a point at both top and bottom to form a crescent. The hair itself is why Shaun was chosen to be the Starlight Key. Impossibly black and reflecting light perfectly but sporadically, leaving the impression of stars hidden within the tresses. Shaun will not let his hair be cut and it falls in a seamless curtain to halfway down his calves. On the back of his left shoulder is a blue design, looking somewhat like an abstract flower, that stretches from the base of his neck, halfway down his back and tapering to a point just over the top of his shoulder. It seems to be simply part of his skin and glows slightly brighter than the rest. Attire: When Shaun was first found, he wasn't wearing clothing and to his knowledge, never had, so modesty has never been an issue. It wasn't acceptable for his first 'job' (before the Palace) however, so he's gotten used to wearing something...just not much. Shaun prefers dark, flowing clothing and usually along the lines of a loincloth or skirt. Black is his favorite and definitely dominates his wardrobe but the occasional burgundy or navy have worked their way in as well. Anything constrictive is swiftly discarded and returned to the Palace. Shaun isn't too fond of jewelry but will occasionally wear a necklace with a black pendant or silver bracelets (he likes how they sound). General rule of thumb is the darker it is and the less of it he has to deal with, the better. Voice: Shaun has the voice of a siren. When he's particularly happy with an owner he'll sing for them and when he's particularly disgusted, he just stops talking. Most owners graced with his singing comment that his voice is different when he sings, clearer and captivating. Those owners often leave calmer and happier than others leaving the Starlight Key. Temperament: Quiet but by no means timid. Shaun doesn't really understand the idea of inhibitions and though his training has taught him to be a bit more subtle with his owners, he's still very straight-forward and makes no qualms about what he is or why the owner is there. He takes the direct approach to most things and often with a single minded intensity that can seem a bit daunting. If he wants something, he goes after it. Highly intelligent, Shaun is probably the only person capable of reading in his room (explanations below) and definitely takes advantage of it. Every book the Palace provides him with he reads as soon as possible and keeps until he has the information memorized. He prefers fact to fiction but both have places on his shelves. Shaun's curiosity is insatiable and the only thing better than a book is someone willing to talk. Experience: His fragile, doll like appearance and near immunity to physical damage were at first thought of as an appeal to the rougher clients but soon proved irritating instead. None of the S&M owners are given a turn with the Starlight Key anymore as they either come away angry and frustrated or get violent enough to actually hurt Shaun and he's proven to be very slow about healing (though he does heal without scarring). He’s been at the Palace for six years and between owners and trainers has become quite skilled. Billed as an aggressive bottom, Shaun has no sense of modesty and about as many inhibitions when it comes to sex. Quirks: Shaun's eyes are extremely sensitive to light and the highest setting on his room's lights is just barely above dim. It is possible to force the controls past that setting and bring the lights up to a human's standard of normal but it's been triggered to set off an alarm and bring medical assistance (information all owners are given before entering the Starlight room, explanation in background). If his eyes are sensitive to light, his ears and the mark on his back are sensitive to pleasure. Neither seem to be overly sensitive to pain but even the lightest caress can send him reeling and while he enjoys the feel of it he hates the loss of control when either is touched outside of sex as he finds it difficult to think straight. Despite the enjoyment he gets out of the blue mark during sex, he despises it and will often hold himself in positions specifically designed to cover the mark with his hair. He has no rhyme or reason for this reaction and doesn't understand it himself, but it's there. And on top of all that, his temperature runs a few degrees higher than normal so he always feels warm to the touch, his temperature only lowering when sick. Background: A Palace representative found Shaun after being tipped off to attend a cheap carnival that still employed a freak show. He was bought away from that torment and remains extremely grateful to the Palace for that. Being on display involved a lot of exposure to bright lights and while the show's proprietors claim he only spoke a strange, lyrical language when they first acquired him, he now only remembers bits and pieces of it and none of the meanings. Shaun's guess and that of the Palace medics working with him is that prolonged exposure to the lights and associated pain are what fragmented his memory. Because of this, the lights in his room are kept very low and triggered to alert the medical staff if forced to normal levels; the Palace does *not* want to re-train the Starlight Key but they also recognize the need for said medical staff to see if they're called on an emergency. Shaun remembers virtually nothing before being bought by the Palace and none of that is from his stay with the freak show, just a vague knowledge of prolonged pain. While Shaun is curious about the world beyond the Palace he doesn't think he could survive if he left. He knows his appearance is abnormal for most people and without being able to stand the pain of any significant light exposure, he wouldn't feel safe leaving his room. Environment: The Starlight Rooms are a haven of night. Located beneath the Palace there are no windows and only one door in or out. The hallway directly outside the Starlight Room is pitch black, the only light coming from the door itself whose frame, lock and knob are outlined with a gentle blue-white light. Upon entering, the main room is circular with a domed ceiling reaching nearly ten feet at the center. Walls and ceiling both are painted a blue-tinged black with tiny fiberoptics embedded without create an accurate portrait of the night sky. All the furniture is contemporary black with the same lighting along the edges that the door had around the frame. All pillows and cushions have white piping edging for easy location and retrieval. Bookshelves take up the bottom three feet around the perimeter of the room with the same glowing edging as the furniture and low-level black lights highlighting the carpet underneath. The carpeting is very deep and impossibly soft, pure black save for the occasional bit of silver threading to continue the star theme. The focal point for the room is, quite obviously, the bed. A circular bed raised about a foot off the floor and bordered with cushions, it's a good seven feet in diameter and usually where Shaun waits for new owners. The sheets and covers are both black but the covers are embroidered with hundreds of tiny silver stars. Along the walls, the only disturbances in the fiberoptic star-scape and bookshelves are two light-outlined doorways, the bathroom and the closet. The bathroom follows the same idea as the main room, contemporary clean lines in black with only the edging lights to keep someone from running into things. In the bathroom, the floor is blue-black tile with hand painted silver stars. The tub, sink and toilet are all silver and easily visible in the room's dim lighting. For both rooms, there are small hanging lights dispersed unevenly throughout the room. They offer the same diffused blue-white light as the edging and can be controlled by a panel next to the door. The highest setting easily reached is the most light Shaun can easily tolerate.
